On May 21, 2009, elections of the Rector took place at the Sokhumi State University. Four candidates participated in the elections held by the Academic Council of the University. By a majority of votes Professor Joni Apakidze has been elected a Rector. Observers were invited for monitoring the elections.

On May 7, 2009, His Holiness and Beatitude Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi Ilia II granted the highest award of the Georgian Church – the Medal of Saint George - to the Sokhumi State University. The ceremony of bestowal was held at the Patriarchate on May 17.

On March 24, 2009, the first, organizational meeting of Representative Board of the Sokhumi State University was held. Acting Rector of the University, Professor Joni Apakidze greeted the meeting and wished it success in future activity. According to the tradition, an elderly member of the Board, Professor Boris Kvaratskhelia, conducted the meeting. Authority of the meeting was recognized unanimously. Associate Professor of the University Marine Khubua was elected as the Head of the Quality Assurance Department, and Associate Professor Larissa Takalandze – as the Speaker of the Board.
