On May 21, 2009, elections of the Rector took place at the Sokhumi State University. Four candidates participated in the elections held by the Academic Council of the University. By a majority of votes Professor Joni Apakidze has been elected a Rector. Observers were invited for monitoring the elections.

On May 7, 2009, His Holiness and Beatitude Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi Ilia II granted the highest award of the Georgian Church – the Medal of Saint George - to the Sokhumi State University. The ceremony of bestowal was held at the Patriarchate on May 17.

On December 10, 2008 by the Provision #239 the Georgian Government adopted an amendment to the provision #160 (2007) after which the Legal Entity of Public Law Sokhumi University has been renamed as the Legal Entity of Public Law Sokhumi State University

The Ministry of Economical Development of Georgia has granted the building at #12 Jikia Street as a usufruct to the Sokhumi University.

The First Lady of Georgia Sandra Roelofs and the Minister of Education of Georgia Giorgi Nodia visited Sokhumi University and wished a happy and successful new academic year to the students and academic staff of the University.
