The library of the Sokhumi University was founded in 1977 and since that, serves as a significant scientific, informational and educational center of the University. There is a vast amount of scientific and educational literature accumulated in the library, which allows students and academic staff to find necessary information for their work.

Library Holdings

Presently there are 28723 bibliographical units (books, magazines and periodicals) in possession of the library, some of which have been purchased by the library itself and others donated by the various organizations and personalities:

Structure of the Library

A library manager is in charge of the library. The staff consists of four specialists/librarians. There are two kinds of catalogs (alphabetical and systematic) in different languages there: Georgian, Russian, English, German, etc. Further processing and updating of catalogs and files is going on permanently. Book holdings are put in the register of the university library.

There is a card filing system functioning for subscribers. Students should have the student’s cards to have access to the library books.

Two reading-halls, located in two buildings of the Sokhumi University are carrying on various functions: there are often held meetings, presentations, exhibitions and other interesting events there.

Library Regulations

• The books can be borrowed for 10 days period;
• The books that are unique or rare and cannot be borrowed. They can be used only in a library reading-hall;
• Only the books, represented in several copies, can be borrowed;
• It is not allowed to copy the books by xerox;
• The library specialist can change the rules of borrowing the books or reject giving them out to the person who previously treated the books improperly.

The library works every day, except weekends, from 9.00 to 18.00.
