On
May 29, 2026, as part of "Abkhazetoba 2026", the "Peace Education
Center" was solemnly opened at Sokhumi State University. Within the
framework of the event, a scale model of the Likhni Church of the Dormition of
the Mother of God was also unveiled—one of the most significant symbols of the
historical-cultural and spiritual heritage of Abkhazia, deeply tied to
centuries-old history and national identity.
The
ceremonial opening of the event took place in Building I of Sokhumi State
University and commenced with a traditional Georgian dance.
The
official part of the event continued on the third floor of Building I of
Sokhumi State University, where the "Peace Education Center" was
opened. Welcome addresses to the gathered audience were delivered by the Deputy
Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, Zviad Gabisonia; the First
Vice-Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia and Chairman of the Temporary Commission
on Territorial Integrity and De-occupation, Giorgi Volski; the Chairman of the
Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Giorgi Jintcharadze; and the
Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Jemal
Gamakharia.
The
second part of the event was held in Building II of Sokhumi State University,
featuring the theatrical performance "Return to Sokhumi". The play
was staged by director Giorgi Sikharulidze based on Guram Odisharia's work of
the same name, specifically produced for the "Abkhazetoba 2026"
framework. The performance featured students from Sokhumi State University and
the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film Georgia State University.
The
theatrical performance symbolically resonated with the ideas of historical
memory, identity, return, and peaceful coexistence, which formed a core
component of the event's overall concept.
