The New Rector’s First Working Day

On July 23, 2025, Tea Jugeli, Doctor of Law and newly elected Rector of Sokhumi State University, officially assumed her duties.

She was welcomed by Professor Zurab Khonelidze, who had successfully led the university in exile since July 21, 2017. Professor Khonelidze introduced Dr. Jugeli to key members of the administration, including Professor Davit Jalaghonia, Chancellor, and Associate Professor Nino Tophuridze, Speaker of the Representative Council.

Together, they visited the university’s distinctive foyer—a symbolic space designed by Professor Khonelidze, embodying the institution’s national identity and mission. Dr. Jugeli also toured the university library, met with staff, and familiarized herself with the working environment. Later, in the Rector’s office, she and Professor Khonelidze met with members of the Academic Council, faculty deans, and administrative personnel.

Reflecting on his years in leadership, Professor Khonelidze shared:

“I will always remain closely connected to the university—it is my family. Every student and staff member holds a special place in my heart. Over the past years, we’ve faced many challenges, but we’ve reshaped the perception of Sokhumi State University, turning it into a beacon of peace and education.

I wholeheartedly wish Mrs. Tea Jugeli great success as Rector. I’m confident she will continue to move the university forward and bring new energy to its development. I am certain she will achieve great things for our country. The university enjoys strong support from the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. In the coming days, Minister Givi Mikanadze and his deputies will visit us.

Mrs. Jugeli, once again, I warmly congratulate you on your election as Rector of Sokhumi State University and wish you every success in working with this outstanding team.”

In response, Rector Tea Jugeli expressed her gratitude:

“Thank you, Professor Khonelidze, for your kind words and warm welcome. I deeply appreciate the support I’ve received from the university community. I will do my utmost to become a true member of this family and contribute to the university’s continued growth. Your leadership has laid a strong foundation, and thanks to that, my start has been much easier.

I must admit, I felt both a sense of responsibility and some nervousness today—being Rector is no small task. But I believe in the support of each and every one of you. Thank you once again for such a heartfelt welcome.”
