Innovative Teaching and Research Methods: Developing Academic Competences

On September 12–14, the Faculty of Law and Diplomacy at Sokhumi State University held a training program at Hotel Ambassador in Katchreti on the topic: “Innovative Teaching and Research Methods: Developing Academic Competences.”

As part of the event, the Faculty Council convened an offsite meeting, where academic staff discussed ongoing teaching and research activities, upcoming initiatives, and strategic directions for development. Particular attention was given to aligning the faculty’s work with modern educational standards and expanding international cooperation.

The training aimed to:

︎ Prepare undergraduate and graduate law programs for cluster accreditation;

︎ Enhance the professional competences of academic staff by adopting innovative teaching and research approaches;

︎ Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration.

These goals support not only the improvement of teaching quality but also ensure that the university’s law programs meet international standards and strengthen their competitiveness.

The seminar was formally opened by SSU Rector, Ms. Thea Jugheli, who emphasized that one of the university’s key priorities is introducing innovative methods in teaching and research—an approach that improves academic quality and supports the university’s competitiveness internationally.

The three-day sessions were led by:

·         Prof. Sergo Tchelidze, Doctor of Law, who introduced participants to modern methods of syllabus design and assessment.

·         Prof. Natia Makhatadze, Doctor of Law, who presented on contemporary approaches to legal research and methods of interdisciplinary legal studies.

·         Prof. Zviad Gabisonia, Doctor of Law and Deputy Minister of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia, who spoke about integrating modern technologies into the teaching process. He drew special attention to one of the Ministry’s important initiatives—the digitalization project, which involves generating digital copies of diplomas issued in Georgia and ensuring their international recognition. Amendments to the Law on Education and strategic developments in artificial intelligence were also discussed.

At the final session, participants reviewed the insights and experience acquired and discussed prospects for further cooperation.
