On
May 22, 2020, Her Excellency Mrs. Ingrida Lavrence, the Plenipotentiary and
Extraordinary Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia, visited the Rector of
Sokhumi State University, Professor Zurab Khonelidze.
During
their meeting, both parties discussed the operational conditions of Sokhumi
State University amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was
underscored that the university has adeptly navigated the current crisis,
effectively implementing the educational process through online modes. The
Rector emphasized that every crisis presents an opportunity for progress, and
the university is committed to overcoming challenges while gaining valuable
experience that will undoubtedly contribute to future success.
Her
Excellency Mrs. Ingrida Lavrence expressed keen interest in university
diplomacy during her visit, seeking comprehensive information from its author,
Rector Zurab Khonelidze. It was highlighted that this new paradigm introduces a
fresh, untapped, yet highly promising socio-cultural role for universities.
The
head of the Latvian diplomatic mission underscored the relevance of this
innovative approach in diplomacy and announced that the Embassy of Latvia would
organize a seminar on university diplomacy. Furthermore, she mentioned hosting
a presentation for Khonelidze's new book, inviting diplomatic missions from EU
countries accredited in Georgia to participate in the event. This initiative
reflects the growing recognition and interest in the concept of university
diplomacy within the international diplomatic community.
