Jubilee Seminar Marking the 150th Anniversary of Ivane
Javakhishvili Held at Sokhumi State University
On April 20, 2026, Sokhumi State
University in Tbilisi hosted a jubilee seminar commemorating the 150th
anniversary of Ivane Javakhishvili. The event, organized by the university’s
Scientific Research and Development Department, was held in the Zviad Gamsakhurdia
Conference Hall (Auditorium 712) at 61 Politkovskaya Street.
The seminar was officially opened
by Associate Professor and Vice-Rector Romeo Galdava, who delivered welcoming speech
to the audience. Among the attendees were Marina Turava, Dean of the Faculty of
Humanities at the university, and Professor Zurab Papaskiri, who also moderated
the event.
The program included two main
presentations examining Ivane Javakhishvili’s scholarly and public
contributions:
“Ivane Javakhishvili – Founder of the Modern Georgian Historical School
and the First Georgian University”
Presented by Professor Lia Akhaladze, this talk highlighted Javakhishvili’s
crucial role in shaping Georgian historiography and establishing national
higher education.
“Ivane Javakhishvili on the Soviet Trial” Delivered by Dr. Levan
Jikia, representing both the National Archives of Georgia and Sokhumi State
University, this presentation addressed an important historical episode related
to Javakhishvili’s life and work.
The seminar sought to reaffirm
Ivane Javakhishvili’s importance in science, education, and national
development. It brought together academics, university staff, and history
enthusiasts to reflect on and discuss his enduring intellectual and cultural
legacy.
